
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Then, when she was performing in summer show she was convinced by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA she worked as a secretary, completing her TV debut in an episode of Baretta.Contrary to reports that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that the two have never met. DeWitt is most well-known for her performance in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run as Janet Wood. This was an opportunity she was offered when she was cast in the pilot episode that followed. Janet was also a part of the episode of The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt was the last actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then she ceased acting for several years. In June 1991 she came back to acting with a part in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. She also appeared in Spring Fling, the 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain featured the character who was modeled after her voice. She was voiced by an actress in 1997. She made an appearance on the episode Cybill and also had an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. Six of her 2000s TV works included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as well as Call of the Wild.
